Charging is the most dangerous part of FPV. Wrong rate, skipped balance cycle, or an overcharged cell can end a session — or a house. Here's the full breakdown.

C rate math

Charge rate in amps = C × capacity(Ah). For our 1300mAh pack: 1C = 1.3A, 2C = 2.6A. The C rating printed on your pack is the discharge rating — the safe charge rate is usually 1–5C, specified separately in the pack datasheet. When in doubt, 1C is always safe.

Always Balance

Balance charging keeps your packs alive

A 6S LiPo is 6 individual cells in series. Even identical cells drift apart over charge cycles — one cell ends up at 4.22V while another is 4.17V. Unbalanced cells charge unevenly, leading to one cell overcharging while the pack reads nominal.

Balance charging connects to every individual cell through the balance lead (JST connector), equalizing each cell to within ±0.02V. It takes longer but dramatically extends pack life and prevents cell damage.

Our rule: Every charge is a balance charge. Never skip the balance lead for convenience. The HOTA D6 Pro defaults to balance charge — correct behavior.

Advanced

Parallel charging — fast but risky

Parallel charging lets you charge multiple packs simultaneously from one charger. The charger sees it as one big pack. The risk: if packs are at different voltages, current flows between packs before the charger even starts — potentially at hundreds of amps through thin wires.

Before you parallel charge:
  • Check voltage on every pack — must be within 0.1V of each other
  • Feel each pack — never parallel charge a warm pack
  • Use a proper parallel board with fuse protection
  • Set charger to total mAh (sum of all packs)
  • Stay nearby during the session — never leave unattended
AI drone field ops: For autonomous patrol missions, you'll swap packs frequently. Parallel charging 2–3 packs at once works well with the HOTA D6 Pro's dual ports. Never parallel charge packs from different charge cycles — always group packs that came off the same mission together. Their voltages will match.
Storage

Always store at 3.85V/cell

Storing a fully charged or fully discharged LiPo accelerates cell degradation. 3.85V/cell (~50% charge) is the stable storage voltage. The HOTA D6 Pro has a dedicated storage charge mode — use it if you're not flying within 24 hours.
